Ask That God is the fourth studio album by Australian electronic music duo Empire of the Sun, released on 26 July 2024 through EMI Music Australia and Capitol Records https://www.empireofthesunofficialmerch.com/collections/media. It is their first studio album since 2016’s Two Vines. The album was preceded by the singles “Changes”, “Music on the Radio”, and “Cherry Blossom”, and also includes their 2023 collaboration with Nick Littlemore’s project Pnau, “AEIOU”.

In March 2024, the group’s social media platforms became deserted of all previous media, including the profile picture changing to black. The pages soon began to tease a new single: “Changes”, which was released on 5 April 2024.

Littlemore decided to opt out of performing with the band live, citing ‘I’ve always felt that once you make a record it’s not yours anymore’. Steele gave the impression that his partner left the band in September 2009, however, Littlemore resurfaced in the following month, citing his production work and a project with Cirque du Soleil as the reason for the lack of communication. He divided his time between the UK and Montreal while working on other creative commitments. Steele continued to perform live with the band at a number of Australian outdoor events. Towards the end of 2009, the band received a number of ARIA Awards for Walking on a Dream, including Best Album of the Year.

The duo have won a number of Australian music awards, with Walking on a Dream receiving 11 nominations at the ARIA Music Awards of 2009 and winning seven – including Album of the Year. As a live band, they have performed internationally and are known for their flamboyant costumes and elaborate stage sets.

Helmed by Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore, Empire of the Sun just completed a whirlwind series of dates around the globe, including a concert at Los Angeles’ historic Hollywood Bowl, a headline slot at Mexico’s Corona Capital festival and sold-out shows in Brooklyn, NY, Guadalajara, MX and Sydney, Brisbane & Perth in their native Australia. The band is touring in support of its new album, Ask That God (Capitol Records/EMI AUS), which debuted in the top five of Billboard’s Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart.

“I think what brings us back is what Edgar Cayce said, is that sound is the medicine of the future, and I think we’re seeing that now, and I think that’s what’s always binded us together, is to make things that would live in the hearts,” Littlemore said.

“We had to turn all of the computers off, we had to shut everything down, and even though the pandemic was horrible, for the band I thought it was a bit of a blessing because we got to step away,” Steele told Billboard. “For 20 years we’ve built this castle, and it was time for us to kind of abandon the dream and let it all get covered in reeds, to then come back again and realize what we loved so much about it in the first place.”

Their seminal debut album, Walking On A Dream, which the musicians described as “a spiritual road movie” spawned iconic singles “Walking On A Dream” and “We Are The People.” The critically acclaimed second LP, disco-pop Ice On The Dune, featured “Alive” and “DNA” and saw the band tour the world. Third LP Two Vines found the band welcoming guests like Lindsey Buckingham, members of David Bowie’s band from the Blackstar sessions, and Wendy Melvoin from Prince & the Revolution and featured singles “High And Low” and “Way To Go.” 2024’s Ask That God, with hits “Changes,” “Cherry Blossom” and “Music on the Radio,” demonstrated why they are, in the words of HYPEBEAST, “everyone’s favorite esteemed, electric Australian duo.”

My second time seeing EOTS and it was super fun. The opener Neil Francis was fun & a good lead-in for the positive vibes of EOTS. The backup dancers had interesting costumes as always and accompanied bright backing visuals. It all matched up well with their album art & music videos. Even in the light rain, the crowd started energetic and sang along to every song.
