What earlier had been Judge crashing into the center-field wall to steal extra bases turned into Judge dropping a routine fly ball. What had been a Cy Young winner cruising, cool, confident, unbothered, devolved into an ace shaken and sweating and searching for an out. What had been a nascent no-hit bid became a five-run, three-blunder, 38-pitch inning. What had been a 5-0 lead was now a 5-5 tie. The Yankees defense failed Cole in the fifth inning, but he did his part in that, as he declined to cover the bag on a squibber to first baseman Anthony Rizzo.

As Soto and Ohtani continue to shine, their teams are also helped by other stars, such as NY’s Aaron Judge and the Dodgers’ Mookie Betts. LA infielder Tommy Edman is also getting hot at the right time, having just won NLCS MVP.

This is an iconic Fall Classic that’s about to take place between the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees. When the World Series begins with Game 1 on Friday night at Dodger Stadium, it will be a clash of coastal behemoths who have been accumulating luminaries in anticipation of a moment just like this.
After missing the postseason in 2023, the New York Yankees traded for star outfielder Juan Soto to help bolster their lineup. Soto and Aaron Judge helped the Yankees to lead the American League in runs and the MLB in home runs. Joining Soto and Judge as All-Stars were relief pitcher Clay Holmes. The Yankees’ closer role initially belonged to Holmes, but after recording an MLB-leading 11 blown saves, he lost the position. Luke Weaver took over the role in September and retained it throughout their postseason run. After not appearing in a game until June 19 due a spring training injury, reigning AL Cy Young award winner Gerrit Cole headed a deep rotation of starters including Carlos Rodón, rookie Luis Gil, Nestor Cortes, Marcus Stroman, and Clarke Schmidt. At the trade deadline, the team added Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Mark Leiter Jr.
“In my eyes, he’s a superhero, really, honestly and truly,” Dodgers reliever Anthony Banda said. “Watching him get through the injury and seeing the rehab he put in, the time he put in and just trying to get back to health, to get back on the field, doing everything he can — that speaks volumes of him as a player and as a person. He really cares about this group. He cares about the organization. He cares about winning, and that’s what drives us all.”
Oldest game in the world
First patented in 1904, The Landlord’s Game, designed by Elizabeth Magie, was originally intended to illustrate the economic consequences of Ricardo’s Law of Economic rent and the Georgist concept of a single tax on land value. A series of board games were developed from 1906 through the 1930s that involved the buying and selling of land and the development of that land. By 1933, a board game had been created much like the version of modern Monopoly by the Parker Brothers.
Neural network research has resulted in three modern proprietary programs, JellyFish, Snowie and eXtreme Gammon, as well as the shareware BGBlitz and the free software GNU Backgammon. These programs not only play the game, but offer tools for analyzing games and detailed comparisons of individual moves. The strength of these programs lies in their neural networks’ weights tables, which are the result of months of training. Without them, these programs play no better than a human novice. For the bearoff phase, backgammon software usually relies on a database containing precomputed equities for all possible bearoff positions. There are 54,263 bearoff positions for each side. This means there are 542632 total bearoff positions (~3 billion positions). In 1981 Hugh Sconyers wrote a computer program that solved all positions with nine checkers or fewer for both sides. In the early 1990s Hugh extended his results to all bearoff positions. For each position there are four results: no cube, roller’s cube, center cube and opponent’s cube. So, Hugh’s bearoff database contains the exact answers to ~12 billion bearoff situations.
The best part? Ancient games provide insights into the cultures, values, and daily lives of people from the past. They are an essential part of a culture’s heritage. Preserving and understanding these games helps to maintain cultural identity and traditions, even as societies evolve.
The objective of the game is for a player to move all seven of their pieces along the course and off the board before their opponent. On all surviving gameboards, the two sides of the board are always identical with each other, suggesting that one side of the board belongs to one player and the opposite side to the other player. When a piece is on one of the player’s own squares, it is safe from capture.

“Some people think a slugfest is a good game,” Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy said. “Some people think a pitcher’s duel is a good game. I don’t know. I think if you just add a little bit of all the elements, it’s pretty fun.”

To suggest any of the games, however many remain, can match Game 1 is unfair — unless this is the sort of series where magic courses throughout, where two teams are so good, so evenly matched, so ready for the moment, so keen to win, that the hype is simply an accelerant. Maybe Game 2 on Saturday night continues where Game 1 so clearly delivered.
And in the end, the Dodgers came out with a magical opening act in which Freeman gave off those Gibby goosebumps — almost to the minute (Gibson’s homer had landed at 8:38 p.m. local time, Freeman’s cleared the wall at 8:39).
Game 1 featured starting pitchers Jack Flaherty for the Dodgers and Gerrit Cole for the Yankees. Country singer Brad Paisley performed “The Star-Spangled Banner”. In tribute to Fernando Valenzuela, his former Dodger teammates Orel Hershiser and Steve Yeager placed a ball on the blue No. 34 painted on the pitcher’s mound instead of throwing out a ceremonial first pitch.
