Tasked with ridding the city of its Scavenger infestation, Artificer makes their way to the center, where they find a wide hall next to a Scavenger Treasury. Inside the hall is a tall, climbable ‘throne’ upon which sits a Chieftain Scavenger wearing a heavily carved and decorated Vulture Mask and sporting the Mark of Communication.
In the base game, the only available ending is the ascension ending. Ascension occurs in Depths after reaching the Void Sea. On descending, a large number of Void Worms are seen in the distance. One of them takes an interest in Slugcat and swims closer to watch their descent. The Void Worm then reaches out a ‘tentacle’, hooking onto Slugcat and dragging them down at an incredibly high speed before releasing them and swimming away. After some time, a bright glow appears, prompting Slugcat to swim towards it. Soon after, other identical Slugcats join them, mirroring the player’s movement. Upon reaching the source of the light, the ending cutscene is triggered.
Upon death, the slugcat returns to the last save point. The player also loses one karma, which is indicated at the bottom of the screen. Karma is gained upon successfully hibernating, and the player can shield their current karma level by eating a yellow karma flower. The flower appears in set locations around the map and is re-planted wherever the slugcat dies while under its effects. The player needs to meet a specific karma level to go through karma gates, which lie at the borders of every region in the game.
Upon attempting to gift or antagonize the Chieftain, they become aggressive and jump off the throne. Artificer must knock off their plated armor and kill them while avoiding their attacks, as well as those of the Scavengers that spawn throughout the fight. Once the Chieftain has been killed, their mask may be picked up, triggering the ending cutscene.
