As an Occultist, I spent the first 15 levels or so using a Fire Staff and an Ice Gauntlet, but as soon as I got my hands on a decent Void Gauntlet, the game became much easier. I was still using Green weapons (they scale from Grey to Green to Blue to Purple to Gold in terms of power and capability) but was progressing through areas much quicker than when using the Fire or Ice weapons. The same was true for my armour—by the time my access ended, I didn’t have a single Blue or better piece of armour or clothing.
We all see it, there’s no roadmap, the “season of nothing” filler itself is delayed, there hasn’t been any PVP content in years, and everything promised seems to be a final attempt to monetize the game (console sales) before eventual shutdown a la Crucible, amazon’s last failed game.
That new MMO smell started to grow stale, however, and those numbers dramatically dropped; by spring of 2022 they had plateaued to around 20-30,000. Now, that’s hardly a low number. Tens of thousands of players kept coming back and playing together, and New World managed to maintain this level of popularity until this year, where by May it had dwindled to less than 10,000 concurrent players.
MMOs change all the time. WoW, for instance, frequently includes big game-wide changes before the arrival of a new expansion, like The War Within’s Warband system or the introduction of Chrome time—allowing players to level in whatever expansion they want—just before the arrival of Shadowlands.
